In the year 1324 Hermann has moved from the monastery “Niederalteich” in the valley of the river ”Flanitz” and has put up a monastery-cell within the tight wood at the slope of the mountain “Rachel”. After his death a wooden chapel was build by “Hartwig von Degensberg” in the year 1331. It was him bringing the picture of mercy “Unserer lieben Frau”, which was described being miraculous, to the Flanitz-valley. From now on he called the flood plain “Unserer Frauen Aue”.
For centuries the pilgrimage was flowering in Frauenau and the beautiful rococo-church from the 18th century is the centre of the village to date.
This century has added tourism to pilgrimage and glass making in Frauenau. The officially recognized holiday place and winter resort is located in the Bavarian Forest, by the “Großen Rachel”(1453 m). Frauenau is embedded in the scenically appealing valley of the river “Flanitz” at whose edges mountains are rising to 1500 m altitude. This typical Bavarian Forest village is the ideal starting point for hiking tours and excursions. Part of the village belongs to the National Park “Bavarian Forest”.
